25+ Addix slid on down to Alabama to run the Barbarian Challenge in Gadsden this past Saturday (June 15). This was our second year to have a team at this event.
This race was described as tough, beautiful, a soul crusher and fun.
Noccalula Falls is breathtaking to visit but to actually spend time on the trails and do what we love in such a majestic atmosphere was surreal. The terrain can be best described as one of the toughest in the South with steep incline climbs and extremely technical terrain in the gorge with rocks of all shapes and sizes. Barbarian brings the heat with the one of a kind obstacles. They have unique challenges that are just as tough as the bigger race series, but prove to have you wandering how to attack them. The newest obstacle this year was "meat hook". It was a difficult upper body strength obstacle to say the least. Gliding along a metal pipe with force 5 grips as you traverse what seemed like at least 15 feet was grueling.
The 4 hills of the apocalypse drained those legs and fired up those hammies from the first mile at Kneebow Hill.
Of course you can't talk about Barbarian Challenge without mentioning the Leap of Faith. This is a mind over matter obstacle that leaves even the most seasoned racers questioning their abilities. The difficulty in a physical nature is minimal but the ability to over come the fear of heights or falling is massive. This mind game obstacle is one that beat out a lot of racers.
The festival is one of my favorite in all of OCR because teams are allowed to set up tents, bring in food and it makes for a great time to hang out with some great people for the day.
The team challenge brought out the beast in all competitors who were forced to work together to get each thing completed and cross the line together.
All in all, The 2019 Barbarian Challenge was a great race and we can't wait to be back in 2020!
